AS 1940:2017 for storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids

The Australian Standard for the storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids, AS 1940, has just been updated with a new 2017 revision.

The preface for the revision lists the main changes as:
  • alignment of the classification criteria of C1 combustible liquids to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)
  • plastic polyethylene or other composite polymeric tanks permitted for the minor storage of combustible liquids
  • fire hydrants requirements dealing with fire protection for package stores

There are also new requirements for assessing minor storage located on open land within a designated bushfire prone area.

As petrol and diesel are flammable and combustible liquids (respectively), AS 1940 applies to site's with fuel tanks.  The standard provides requirements for bunding, placarding, safe operations, emergency management and fire protection.
